The Inconveniences Of Convenient Living

Living in Opus has been awesome and I can already tell that my rooming situation with Ben is gonna kick ass. I promise that I'll do a post or something to introduce you to the legend that is Ben at some point, but for now, more evil things are afoot on Creighton's campus. While my rooming situation has been awesome, campus is changing so rapidly that we really can't keep up. What I mean by that is that as soon as we're done with one project (like the Harper Center, which is awesome) we move on straight to the next. Right now, we're building a new women's athletic facility right next to the soccer stadium. The problem? Well, the soccer stadium is a stone's throw from Opus, literally. It's effing next door.

I'm totally fine with all of the expansion of Creighton. Being a tour guide, I find out a lot of stuff that's going on with campus life, including new buildings and where they're gonna be. What happened was that when the money was donated for the new facility, they said that the building had to be done before a certain time. The funny thing is that the money was recently donated (as in, during the time we were building the Harper Center) and they really didn't give us much time to finish (I think until the end of this academic year). Really? Would it kill you to be patient? So every day between the times of Butt-munch in the morning until 11:00 at night, we're serenaded with loud-as-hell drilling. Seriously, there's heavy machinery right outside the hall and the entire building shakes when they're operating.

Webster Street

More Webster Street

To make matters worse, all of this machinery must go somewhere, right? It needs its space along with the space for the materials, right? Funny you should say that because the street that runs along the north side of Opus has been closed off for all of said stuff. Okay, that's fine. I can deal with that street being closed. We still have Florence (East side) and 20th St. (West Side) to keep traffic going. Well, not exactly. Because the construction of the center is taking place on the northeast corner of Florence and Webster, both Florence and Webster have been shut down. But they didn't stop there. they figured that having a one-way street for us to drive through is still too much so they took that away too for sewer reconstruction. There's now a big hole at the intersection of Webster and 20th street where they're messing with the sewer system. What does this mean for us? It just means that between Opus and Davis smells like cat urine. So essentially, the streets that border my apartment on the north, west, and east have all been shut down and since there isn't a street on the south side, we're SOL. Some of these streets have been turned into quasi-parking lots, but that means you have to go the wrong way on a one-way street to get out. I think Helen Keller was involved in the planning of this operation.

20th Street

Not only this, but since I moved in this last May, we've been evacuated three times for emergencies. Two of them happened within 5 days of each other. Only a few days after the gas leak that I mentioned in my last post (last Friday Night), somebody managed to burn the crap out of some bagel bites and the entire residence hall was evacuated this last Wednesday night. There was neither visible flame nor smoke from the outside and we were all pretty much evacuated for 30 minutes for nothing. I just find it funny that we have the same procedures for a lethal gas leak as we do for a person that doesn't know how to cook. But also with all of the construction, we've had some complications that we've all had to deal with, like water shutting off for hours at a time and hot water being turned off for God-knows-how-long. Oh well. Really, all of these things are minor when I think about it. I'm just bitter, I guess.

Hugs and kisses,
Chip

"People keep asking me what 'SOL' means and it means 'sh*t outta luck,' in case you were wondering."
